The ceremony of Rakhi is based on the tying of a piece of thread or an intricate band specially made for the occasion by a girl on the arm of her brother. This is to signify love and a prayer for his protection. Many times girls may also "adopt" a close acquaintance by tying the rakhi band on his arm, signifying a brother-sister relationship.

This picture was taken at a festival in Gravesend, Kent, England where Asian women were exhibiting various Asian arts and a number of young Bosnian refugees came in to see. One of the Asian girls adopted a young Bosnian visitor by tying the rakhi band on his arm, signifying adopion.
